The |testes| (plural for |testis|), also known as testicles, are the main reproductive organs of the male anatomy. They are responsible for generating the sperm cells (spermatozoa) and passing them into the epididymides for storage until ejaculation. The |testes| are slightly elongated globes, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide by 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) long. The |testes| are located outside of the abdominal cavity in a protective pouch of skin called the |scrotum|. This positioning allows them to remain slightly below body temperature, which is critical for the development of viable spermatozoa.
